    Rujak Buah – Jakarta, Indonesia

This was my second time having Rujak in Jakarta. I ordered it from the same vendor as Joshua’s office — very nice people and a great deal.

The Rujak (Indonesian spelling) is a traditional fruit and vegetable salad dish from Southeast Asia, commonly found in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore.

The dish is mixed sliced fruit and vegetables served with spicy palm sugar dressing. You can pick and choose whatever fruits you want and there are some fruits that are only available in Asia, such as yellow watermelon and jack fruit.

Indonesian Rujak is typically made from fresh ingredients and is a very healthy snack with some spicy dipping sauces. I highly recommend trying it if you ever get the chance.

    FOML interview

I recall that around early 2000, I was back home in Taiwan, and my attention was caught by toys that were unlike any that I had seen before. While the design so were simple they were so unique with their apparent street influence. A strong feeling of the designer’s creative vision came over me. These vinyl toys really changed my mind about the toy market because Michael’s vision turned a simple plaything into a 3-D art piece.

    My favorites-

Shoe!

I like Michael Mr. Shoes…since I have always been a huge fan of Nike AF1. I thought his exhibition that the piece accompanied was brilliant mix of his style with the famous sport brand. I also really like Michael Lau’s CC#19 Junkie. The concept of turning a living, breathing person into a toy is an appealing idea, and truly an modern twist on a classic artistic activity. I like the detail of the figure, and that personality traits related to the person is integrated into these toys. Michael seems to catch every small detail to make this a representative of the original friend on whom it is based.

    Share-

Although it is nowhere near museum quality, sometimes I like to open the box holding the figure and then display it inside a series of glass cases. Since the box is an extension of the art, I keep them as well. Some really rare ones, I will leave them inside their boxes to keep them protected for years to come.

    -To ML-

I wanna thank him for keeping me creatively inspired; he is never afraid to challenge himself artistically. I believed he success comes from being such a hard worker and never stop trying to do new things. Because of his influence and way of working, my slogan is “design by belief.”

J.W. Anderson x Run Star Hike ‘White’

I’m a huge fan of English fashion designer, JW Anderson.

He has collaborated with Converse since 2017 and the partnership has kept moving toward his vision and direction.

The new model, Run Star Hike, really caught my eye from their latest fashion show.

    I love English fashion!

Luckily, I was able get them from the Converse site.

The box came in an exclusive limited edition pattern.

It also came with a shoe bag.

There were also extra shoe laces. I like this one more than the plain shoelaces.

I really like the back of the shoe. Very cool!

The bottom soles come in a trio of colors.

I’m really happy with my purchase.

Near my office, in Baldwin Park, there are some great restaurant. For lunch, I went with Larnna to check out Seito Sushi . I was told that this restaurant is owned by some of our Full Sail grads. I really love their installation. It’s very fresh and clean.

I was told that this restaurant is owned by some of ou

The decor is simple and modern.

They have a nice wine collection.

On their lunch menu, they offer ramen as a special combo for a great price. The staff mentioned that the noodles in the ramen are house-made and fresh, like Ippudo.

I chose to try the Shoyu ($14) which is similar. The bowl has fully roasted chicken stock, grilled chicken thigh, onsen tamago, sweet corn, and braised carrot.

The Tonkotsu looked great, especially the braised pork belly! The broth looked super creamy. It takes up to 24 hours to make and also comes with a soy egg, bean sprouts, beni shoga, and nori.

I really enjoyed this place and plan to go back.

    Education Fair – Jakarta, Indonesia

I was so excited to rock my brand new I Love Ugly x Jansport backpack at an event that was held in Pullman Jakarta Central Park, which is one of their major malls too.

The event was held with several schools from all over the world.

The event was busy with so many students looking to study aboard.

It was a fun day, hanging out with my colleague, Surin, and talk to potential students.

Review VIRGIL ABLOH x Louis Vuitton A4 Pouch (Monogram Brown)

It’s already been a year and this is my second time celebrating my birthday with my lovely wife.

We went to the mall and she asked me to go with her to the Louis Vuitton store. I was a little confused because the store is currently under construction but they have a temporary store open near Macy’s. When we got there, she surprised me with a birthday present!

I wish I could take home this box on display.

Starbucks in one hand and a LV bag in the other. Oh happy day!

The box and presentation is so elegant.

It came with a dust bag.

The VIRGIL ABLOH x Louis Vuitton collection quickly sold out in the U.S. and Canada. I tried locating the black colorway but they were all sold out. Luckily they still had some pieces left at my local LV store.

The A4 Pouch (Monogram Brown), which is their standard model, also comes in two other colors and are more expensive, made with premium leather.

I love the small details and colors, especially the chain.

    There’s a front pocket.

The large, main pocket has an insert pocket.

The collection was designed by VIRGIL ABLOH and is pretty difficult to find, but thanks to my wife, I now own my first LV bag.

  • Bumbu Desa – Jakarta, Indonesia

    Bumbu Desa – Jakarta, Indonesia

I was able to visit the Institute Kesenian Jakarta. Thank you to Ryan, from MDFK, for helping to arrange this speaking event.

After the event, Ryan recommended that we try this traditional Indonesian restaurant. The cuisine was Sundanese, which means it was from west Java.

I did a little bit of research about Bumbu Desa and it looks like there is a chain of Sundanese food restaurants in many Indonesian cities.

There is quite a lot offered, and I don’t mean just the food. They also have exhibitions with Indonesia culture and history.

Thanks Surin, Joshua, and Ryan for a great dinner. I really enjoyed this new place and hanging out with great friends.

Institut Kesenian Jakarta (Jakarta Institute of Arts) – Jakarta, Indonesia

After filling up our stomachs with delicious noodles and tasty snacks, we headed to Institut Kesenian Jakarta (Jakarta Institute of Arts) which is the first art school in Jakarta.

I invited my colleague from Singapore, Surin. Thank you for joining!

Also, thanks to Ryan and Walid for helping to arrange this event. It was such an honor to speak at the very first art school in Jakarta.

We also had some local friends who came that are IKJ alumni.

Inside the campus there is art on every wall, similar to the Miami art basel.

Josh gave me this drink to help me since I wasn’t feeling well.

The new building was under construction.

This was the room we met the students in.

Even the stairs had a bunch of cool art.

Thanks to Joshua for coming with me to this event so we could talk about the toy industry and art.

    Josh helped with translating.

It felt great to meet with students.

One of the students, Nadyne, became a friend after the event. We still chat sometimes about how things are with school.

A big thank you to Institut Kesenian Jakarta and Walid for arranging this event.

They gave me a campus tour to check out their classrooms and facilities.

This trip was exhausting but definitely worth it.
